Introduction

As a key member of the Oliver Wyman team, I played a pivotal role in transforming how large companies access and utilise critical information for decision-making. This case study explores my contribution to the development of innovative dashboards that streamlined workflows, improved accessibility, and facilitated more informed decision-making for our clients.

As a UI and UX designer at Oliver Wyman, the role revolved around assisting on various mock ups for pitches, apps or dashboards that the Partners were pitching to our clients. This involved tasks such as conceptualising and designing interfaces that simplified a large amount of data for a car manufacturer, or visualising how a banking app customer flow would look from start to finish. A lot of the role involved creating asset libraries for these dashboards to be constantly changed and updated with relative ease and speed as the process was particularly fast paced.

Client Background

Our clients, multinational corporations spanning various industries, sought a solution to centralise and visualise diverse sets of data in a user-friendly manner. The challenge was to create dashboards that could be easily integrated into daily operations, accessible on both desktop monitors and mobile devices.

Objectives

  • Data Integration:

    • Gather data from multiple partners and internal sources to create a comprehensive dataset for each client.

    • Establish standardised data formats for consistency and ease of integration.

  • User-Centric Design:

    • Design intuitive and user-friendly dashboards that catered to the diverse needs of employees across different roles.

    • Prioritise UI and UX design principles to ensure a seamless and enjoyable user experience.

  • Collaboration with Partners and Clients:

    • Liaise with external partners to understand data structures, sources, and reporting requirements.

    • Collaborate closely with clients to gather insights into their specific workflows, pain points, and desired outcomes.

  • Cross-Platform Accessibility:

    • Develop a solution that could be seamlessly accessed on both desktop monitors and mobile devices, such as iPads.

    • Ensure responsiveness and optimal display on various screen sizes and resolutions.

Process

1. Data Gathering and Integration

  • Conducted in-depth interviews with partners to understand data sources, formats, and integration capabilities.

  • Implemented robust data processing pipelines to normalise and integrate data from disparate sources.

2. UI and UX Design

  • Conducted user interviews and workshops with client teams to identify user personas and use cases.

  • Created wireframes and prototypes to visualise dashboard layouts and functionality.

  • Iteratively refined designs based on feedback, emphasising clarity, simplicity, and accessibility.

3. Collaboration with Partners and Clients

  • Acted as a bridge between Oliver Wyman, external partners, and clients, facilitating effective communication.

  • Conducted regular workshops to gather requirements, discuss design concepts, and ensure alignment with client expectations.

  • Implemented an agile development approach to accommodate evolving client needs and industry trends.

4. Cross-Platform Development

  • Collaborated with the development team to ensure cross-platform compatibility.

  • Conducted rigorous testing on various devices and screen sizes to guarantee a consistent user experience.

Results

  • Unified Data Access:

    • Clients now have a centralised platform offering a unified view of key performance indicators, financial data, and operational metrics.

  • Streamlined Workflows:

    • Employees across different departments reported more streamlined workflows, as they could access relevant information seamlessly.

  • Improved Decision-Making:

    • The intuitive design and accessibility of the dashboards empowered employees to make informed decisions in real-time.
